No Sugar Experiment: Going Cold Turkey....

I’m sure you would all love to know how the first three days have been. I would love to say to you all, that I have had no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever, as my diet was so blessedly perfect to begin with that it wouldn't have been possible to have such an effect...however I would be lying.

I would love to say that I have spent the past three days looking more like this…

Than this…

But I thought you said you had a good diet, I hear you all question. Well so did I, until I spent an hour and a half doing my usual shop that takes 15 minutes, reading every last ingredient on every item I bought. Did you know that light soy sauce had three different types of sugar in? Yep neither did I.

Although I usually use my noggin, and avoid the typical naughty foods such as chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets and takeaways where and when I can, I am also a victim of the sweet tooth and have these from time to time, as long as I know I will be burning them off via some hardcore cardio. What I didn’t realise was, exactly how much sugar I was consuming due to how many items it was hidden in.

Yes, it is a case of calories in and calories out, and you can’t avoid sugar, as carbohydrate comes from natural sugars and this is good and needed for energy. However it is the added refined sugars, glucose syrups, syrups, caramel additives in the most obscure items that lead to hormonal imbalances, blood sugar rollercoaster’s and most importantly body fat.

I think the cravings and withdrawal symptoms are starting to subside, and let me tell you it hasn’t been pretty. I have had headaches, twitchiness, been tired, grouchy and generally not very fun…and in comparison to the majority of the population I consume hardly any sugar so god knows what crazy stuff is going on inside other people’s bodies that we can’t see.

When I wrote my first blog about how sugar was a drug, I didn’t class myself as being an addict. Although not a serious offender I have to say I may not be returning to the land of sweets and biscuits on a regular basis after this, having seen the after effects of cutting out those refined products from my body. I may not be quite as strict, as the sheer amount of foods I can’t consume I absolutely mind boggling.

I have already noticed a difference physically; my clothes feel slightly bigger, and I’m hoping that I become a more pleasant person over the next few days. I think the biggest lifesaver will be nakd bars I found on the whole food aisle, naturally sweet and tasty without the S word.

Pray for those surrounding me that the withdrawal effects will be over by tomorrow!!!!
